What is ocean bound plastic, and how is it different from regular recycled plastic?
Ocean bound plastic (OBP) is plastic waste collected within 50 kilometres of a coastline or waterway, in regions without formal waste management, before it can enter the ocean. It differs from generic post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic in one key way: OBP is defined by collection geography and environmental risk prevented, not just by recycled content. Brands use OBP-sourced resin to reduce marine plastic pollution upstream while meeting sustainability commitments that generic recycled content claims don’t fully address.
